A Stitch in Time Saves Nine: What’s True for Grandma is True for your Roof

Removing debris on the rooftop of your commercial property is a simple step that can prevent a host of costly problems. For starters, sharp twigs and branches can damage roof membranes, poking holes and creating an avenue for water to penetrate. What else results from leftover detritus making a home on top of your building? Let’s focus on these four:

  1. Mold. Debris that accumulates will begin to trap moisture. Trapped moisture creates an ideal environment for mold to grow. Breathing in certain types of mold spores may cause serious respiratory issues. It can also break down roofing materials, leaving the roof vulnerable to infiltration.
  2. Pests. Unwanted pests like squirrels and raccoons are attracted to debris. It also creates the perfect dwelling for birds and small animals that have the capacity to wreak havoc on the structural integrity of your roof. Some pests have sharp teeth and claws that can tear through roofing materials, and others leave behind waste that can deteriorate components of your commercial rooftop.
  3. Leaks. As moisture accumulates within the debris, the roofing materials below will start to deteriorate. Water can then leak into the building through these weakened areas. Detritus can also flush into gutters. If the system becomes clogged, it can prevent proper drainage, allowing water to pool and increasing the potential for leaks.
  4. Fire. Organic debris like leaves, twigs, and branches can dry out over time. Stray embers or a spark from lightning can jump-start a fire that can quickly spread throughout a commercial space – a costly calamity to recover from.

With the punishing winds and higher precipitation of the winter season fast approaching, adding fuel to the proverbial fire now is the time to remove collected rooftop debris. Considering the elevated height and balance of body and equipment required, it’s generally unsafe to attempt removal independently. Ask for referrals, check ratings online – then hire a professional roofing contractor to do the work.
